Another rainy day, another closet orphan. I love shirtwaist dresses, but often find them difficult to wear confidently, as they often erase what few below-bust curves I do have. In general, I’m fairly happy with my body, and as I’ve written before, the only part of being tall that annoys me at all anymore is the ways in which it’s inconvenient to be tall (leg room on public transport, sleeves being too short, hard to find large size shoes, etc.) but sometimes, if I’m wearing something that basically makes me look like a drinking straw with a rack, I feel uncomfortable.
Enter this shirtwaist dress, which a) is made of jersey, and thus I can actually wear my regular size without dealing with gapping buttons, instead of having to go up a size and swamp the rest of my body in surplus fabric, and b) has a flared skirt that doesn’t trigger my narrow-hip/nearly straight waist issues. It’s kind of jacked around in the photo, but I lengthened the necklace and popped open another button before leaving the house, so it looked a lot better.
For all that, though, this one may be getting tossed back into the thrift pond, because I’m really not sure I need to devote any of my limited wardrobe space to yet another plain black dress. My black Boden faux-wrap dress has a similar shape, is about the same length, and in pretty much every way could be worn on any occasion I’d wear this one. I’m going to give it some thought, but I’m very pleased to have worn it at least once to see how it worked for me.
Necklace: Oasis, remixed. I was looking for a necklace to break up all the funereal black on this outfit, and maybe add a little interest to what is, after all, a very plain dress, and when I spotted this one on the peg, I loved the idea of going with turquoise for my colour pop.
Dress: Phase 8, thrifted. Phase 8 is such a hit-or-miss retailer for me. Some of their stuff is really very stylish and appealing, and other stuff…ugh, shuffle board on the Lido deck. No. I’m not ready to go gentle into THAT particular good night. I’ve always been pleased with their quality, but their sizing can be wonky.
Bangles: Various, thrifted, remixed. More turquoise!
